Laptop Buying Guide

Buying a new laptop PC

If you are buying a new laptop computer, and you've started looking at advertisements or computer manufacturer web sites, you likely noticed many different specifications and options. Even if you know what they all mean, do you know how much, how fast, or what type you need?

I notice people who have just the right laptop for what they need. Much more often however, I see people with a laptop that's too slow, too big, or doesn't have all the features they wish it did. Generally people spend enough money to get a great computer, but when they purchased their laptop, they just didn't know all the choices they had. This article will try to clarify those choices, including both what the options mean, and also what you need to get for your new laptop.

As the different laptop options are presented, recommendations will be given for what to buy. Obviously different people have different needs, so the recommendations will be broken down for three categories of users. You may fall squarely into one of these categories, or somewhere in between.

Budget System

Cost is the biggest factor. You want a good system that meets your needs, but you're on a tight budget. You want to know what the minimums are you need to ensure you get a decent laptop.

Value System

You want it all. You want to maximize speed and capacity without breaking the bank, and you want your laptop to be a reasonable size so you can travel with it if you need to. Most users will fall into this category. Thankfully, in recent years, all around laptops have gotten more and more powerful at the same time they've gotten smaller and lighter.

High End System

You need this computer to be the main computer for you or your family, and top performance is more important than getting the best value for your money. Most serious gamers will fall into this category as well.

The most important thing to realize is that at any price point you can get a fast computer that will meet your needs for years to come, as long as you make an educated purchase. Please take a moment to digest that!

As long as you don't just buy the first laptop you find in your price range, and instead learn about the system features and consider all your choices, you can get a great computer for a very reasonable price. Read on to learn how to get the right laptop for you.
