Laptop DVD Drive

Which laptop DVD drive do I need?

Some small laptops don't even come with a CD or DVD drive any longer to save space. While that is an option, assuming you do want an internal drive, you still have a few choices.

The standard drive is a DVD reader drive. Rest assured that this drive will also all of your CD discs, and will allow you to watch DVD movies as well. Couple this with a TV-out port, and you have a portable movie player, provided you bring the necessary cable with you.

Another popular drive option that is finding its way down to budget computers, is a DVD / CD-RW drive. This drive can read DVD and CD discs, and can also burn audio and data CDs.

A drive which is becoming more prevalent is a DVD / DVD-RW drive. This drive can read DVD and CD discs. It can also write CDs. The drive adds the option to write DVD video and data discs. You can use the drive to make video discs from digital camcorders that will play in your regular DVD player.

Recently, some manufacturers stated adding HD-DVD and Blue Ray drives to their laptops. Unless you absolutely are sure you want one of these, it makes sense to avoid them. They will be very expensive, and their reliability will absolutely be a question. Stick to DVD for now in laptops.

Recommendations

Budget System

A DVD reader is a fine choice and is a good way to save money. Remember, a DVD reader can also read all your old CD discs, and you can always add an external or DVD/CD-RW drive later.

Value System

A DVD / DVD-RW drive is a good choice. It's becoming a standard option, and when it isn't, the price to upgrade is usually small. Getting a DVD/CD-RW is a good way to save a little money, but only settle for a plain DVD reader drive if you are sure that is all you want.

High End System

Get either a DVD / CD-RW or a DVD / DVD-RW drive. If you don't actually have current plans to burn DVD discs, you may want to save some money and stick with the DVD / CD-RW, you can always add an external DVD-RW drive later.
